The origin of the species. HUE 166 – affectionately known as Huey – was the first in our lineage of vehicles designed to tackle any terrain. Its creation marked the realisation of a concept first sketched in the sand by Land Rover’s original innovator, Maurice Wilks.

In 1970, the introduction of the Range Rover changed everything. Never before had the luxury of an executive saloon been paired with such rugged off-road 4WD capability, giving birth to a motoring phenomenon. Winner of two Paris-Dakar Rallies and the first vehicle to traverse the Americas via the infamous Darién Gap, the original Range Rover is a global icon.

The original Discovery was developed in record time and quickly became Europe’s best-selling 4x4. The trademark step in the roof gave headroom above the optional inward-facing seats and is now a design cue recognised the world over.

These limited-edition models were produced to celebrate the Camel Trophy event, headlined by Discovery from 1990 – 1997. Modifications included additional roll cages, underbody armour, snorkels, roof racks, decals and communications equipment.

To compete in the G4 Challenge – successor to the Camel Trophy – 28 standard production-line Range Rover models were specially equipped with roof racks, additional lighting, winches and the latest Goodyear tyres. All were also painted an eye-catching Tangiers Orange and emblazoned with distinctive livery.
